This is weird

The weekend started off with my attempt to be more ‘green’: finally off-loading all the cardboard that have been stuck in my car’s trunk since late last year (it is now April, mind you) after I cleaned out our garage and decided not to have all our cardboard boxes go to a landfill. Since then, I’ve had numerous attempts at trying to dispose of all the corrugated cardboard boxes. Some have involved near trespassing, like trying to dump the recyclables at the old Verizon building in Westlake (umm, since the company sold the building it’s now under a different management; one that actually spent money to overhaul the dumpster area and make it secured and clean!). One other attempt almost got me in trouble with our current building’s security since I almost got caught by the nightly patrol trying to jettison the stuff into our dumpster. It’s hard out here for a green pimp, yo.

On this lazy Saturday we spent the entire day babysitting Aaron and Allyson while their parents got busy painting their rooms at the new house they’re moving into. I gotta say, it was a pretty low-key afternoon but we had so much fun.

Most people who know me know that I’m a huge Jason Mraz fan. In fact, his songs played a prominent role in not only me and Mylah’s wedding day, but in our, ahem, romance: an obscure Mraz song ‘Love Is Real’ became “our” song when we first got together and the song served as the soundtrack to one of our wedding montages as well as the finale to our wedding CD; we also used his newer release (although an old ‘live’ fan-favorite) ‘I’m Yours’ for our main wedding montage. There’s just a nice vibe to his music that seemingly produces a perfect fit for the happy happy joy joy times in our life.

I’ve seen Mraz live on two other occasions: an all-acoustic show with Raul Midon and Hawaiian slack guitarist Makana at the Walt Disney Concert Hall back in 2004, and in 2005 with Trista Prettyman at the Majestic Ventura Theatre. Both shows were amazing, especially the 2004 show; since the concert hall was the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the acoustics at the venue were dead-on perfect.

After using so much of Mraz’ music for our wedding I resolved to bring Mylah to a show the next time he rolls into the area. So, last Saturday, November 1, 2008 we went to go see Jason Mraz live at the Greek Theatre along with my ex-roomie Jodi and her boyfriend Steve. After having a nice dinner at Farfalla Trattoria (kinda ironic considering we just got back from Italy — you’d think we’d be sick of Italian food by now) we jetter off to Griffith Park where the Theatre is at.

Below is his performance — taken with Mylah’s cell phone so excuse the video quality — of our ‘other’ song, ‘I’m Yours’ with a very nice addition of Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’ (another song I absolutely love):

Yet another stellar performance, and I suppose the greatest indicator that Mylah enjoyed it as much as I did is this: the next day she demanded that I make her (as well as her coworker Yvonne) a mix CD of Jason Mraz songs so she can listen to them in her car. My work here is done.

I Am Iron Man

Just the other day I had a conversation with my coworker Richard (an amazing Spanish/classical guitar player who’s currently shopping around his demo CD).

He kept telling me, ‘just take your electric guitar out and wail away, man’.

Today while at Target I kept seeing the trailer for the movie “Iron Man” since they’re advertising the DVD release…so the song got stuck in my head.

Singing it and humming while looking for a bargain hoodie, I resolved to learn that song over the weekend.

What a cool surprise to see my latest Guitar World magazine came in the mail…lo and behold! With a full transcription of ‘Iron Man’ by Black Sabbath!

I guess I know what I’ll be doing this weekend!

Dun..dun..du du dunn!

Our Honeymoon in Europe

A few months before our wedding I thought about setting up a website as well as a corresponding ‘blog’ to record the events as they unfolded during the lead up to the wedding. Unfortunately, things got so hectic that I never really wrote anything in our wedding blog. I now kinda regret not having a record of stuff that happened; at the very least it would’ve served as a nice companion for when our memories start to fade.

So now this is my (probably futile) attempt at documenting, and journaling, our adventures in Europe as we embark on a two-week tour. I figure, there’s so much to see, so much to do, so many people to talk to…might as well blog about it. Hey, if anything this would be cool to show the grandkiddies down the road :-)

The End Of Summer

It was a magnificent end to a summer of hard work preparing for the wedding. How fitting that it was called “Labor” Day.

It’s amazing but it took us about three weeks to finally unwind and come down from the adrenaline rush that was the wedding. It’s funny how I thought during the reception that finally I could relax, when in fact there was still a whole mess of work ahead of us (taking care of family that were staying with us, multiple trips to the airport, unpacking of the gifts, settling all business related to the wedding, cleaning the house, packing away all the wedding stuff, etc!).

Hence for our first weekend alone since the wedding (Mylah’s sister and niece were staying over at a friend’s house) we decided to go on a date…sitting under the stars in Santa Monica.

Santa Monica

I even tweeted the moment in a fit of sheer sentimentality: “Lying on the sand, Santa Monica beach, just had seafood dinner, now grapes & Choc-Nut, about to doze off…life is grand. Beautiful night.”

Pie’s Graduation!

Pie has graduated!

I admit, I’m somewhat of a pig.

Initially I liked the brownish spots on my Macbook’s palmrests ’cause I felt they gave my laptop some much-needed ‘character’. Think of battle scars, or the lines across a wise man’s face, or the weathering that a tree endures over the years.

Yeah, the real reason was I’m really just too lazy to clean my lappie.

Good thing I decided to satisfy my curiousity with Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser….is it just a sponge? How’s it supposed to clean stuff? Can it really erase things magically??? Well, what better test subject than my grime-y laptop!
